COMMUNICATION
Taking
a step towards the goal of ‘Make in India’ and ‘Digital India’, the government
on Tuesday released a roadmap for machine-to-machine (M2M) communications.
The
roadmap will serve as a reference document for the use of machine
communications.
“M2M
communications will impact every aspect of life of common man and results in
substantial and tangible social and economic benefits to consumers, businesses,
citizens and government,” Union Minister of Telecommunication Ravi Shankar
Prasad said while releasing the roadmap.
He
said when the country is focusing on digital empowerment; it has to be ensured
that it plays a lead role in the implementation of M2M technologies.
The
minister also asked all concerned agencies to join hands to ensure that all
needed infrastructure is put in place at the earliest.
M2M
communications, also known as Internet of Things, is a network of multiple
devices that interact among themselves with the help of internet or wireless
connectivity.
“M2M
has great potential to transform India and it is going to be key enabler for
the government vision of Digital India, Make in India and proposed smart cities
in India,” Prasad said, adding that the standardization of M2M roadmap becomes
more important as the country heads towards setting up 100 smart cities and
introducing digitalization all over the country.
ODISHA BUSINESS
Tourists visiting Odisha will soon have a new
destination - a Rock Garden - in line with the one at Chandigarh.
The proposed rock garden is to come up in Ambapua locality here and will require about Rs 7 crore, officials said here.
The state government has already sanctioned Rs 50 lakh for carrying out preliminary work on the proposed project which would be executed by Berhampur Development Authority (BDA).
Secretary of BDA Dipti Mohapatra said a Delhi-based architectural firm had designed the park and the same was presented before Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
"We have prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed rock garden. It will be submitted to the government soon for approval", Mohapatra said.
About two acres of land have already been identified for the purpose and efforts are on to acquire more adjoining land to add more features in the proposed garden, she said.
Giving an outline of the proposed project, she said as the name suggest, almost all artefacts in the garden would be made of rock and sculptures carved out of stone. The garden would be illuminated by solar energy, water to be stored through rain water harvesting structure besides other amusement facilities.

SUPPLY CHAIN
Apple
plans to make its supply chain in China greener as a way to cutdown on carbon
emissions from its product manufacturing, the company announced, according to
PCWorld.
The
U.S. tech giant has already been making its offices and data centers more
environmentally friendly, but wants to extend those efforts to its suppliers in
China, Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement.
Although
the transition to greener manufacturing will take years, Cook said it is important
work that needs to be done.
In
China, Many Apple products, including the iPhone and iPad, are assembled in
large factories run by Foxconn Technology Group and by other large contract
manufacturers.
In
the past, however, Apple has come under criticism for failing to monitor the
labor and environmental conditions at its suppliers. In 2011, a Chinese
environmental group accused alleged Apple suppliers of discharging harmful
waste and gas.
Apple
didn’t mention how it would make its supply chain more green. But to keep its
suppliers in line, the company already conducts routine audits of its
manufacturers. These investigations have focused on finding and correcting any
environmental violations. Last year, the company worked with the manufacturers
to reduce water use and prevent water pollution.
On
Monday, Apple also said its goal was to make 100 percent of its global
operations run on renewable energy. Currently that figure is at 87 percent.
Three
weeks ago, Apple launched its first major solar power project in China, which
will span two 20-megawatt solar farms. Chinese companies are partnering with
Apple on the project, which will be completed at year’s end.
