Messaging giant WhatsApp is rolling out end-to-end encryption, a move that
will potentially protect texts and voice calls of its over one billion users
from hackers and "regimes".
The announcement has come close on the heels of a legal battle between Apple and FBI over the US agency's demand that the iPhone maker help unlock its mobile phones. Many Silicon Valley players had supported Apple citing that user data privacy needs to be respected.
"WhatsApp has always prioritised making your data and communication as secure as possible. And today, we're proud to announce that we've completed a technological development that makes WhatsApp a leader in protecting your private communication: full end-to-end encryption," WhatsApp founder Jan Koum said on the company blogpost.
He added that the latest version of the app will encrypt every call, message, photo, video, file and voice message that is sent on the platform by default, including group chats.

LOGISTICS
eKart,
the logistics arm of Flipkart Ltd, will soon handle logistics for
Alibaba-backed Paytm (One97 Communications Pvt. Ltd), in line with the
company’s plans to open up its services to third-party merchants.
The
Paytm partnership is the latest one struck by eKart as it seeks to build a
large third-party business.
eKart
had earlier signed on with online fashion store Jabong to handle its logistics
and was in advanced talks to close a deal with ShopClues (Clues Network Pvt.
Ltd), Mint reported on 1 February. Besides, the company was also
planning to pilot an inter-city customer-to-customer courier service called
eFlash.
“We
have created a network of national and local logistics partners who empower
sellers to ship to customers across the country in an efficient and effective
manner. eKart will join the network along with Delhivery, GoJavas, Blue Dart
and many more,” said Sudhanshu Gupta, vice-president at Paytm.
Paytm
will start availing itself of eKart’s services in the next two weeks, said one
person aware of the development who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The
two companies have been in talks for the last three weeks, this person added.
Flipkart,
Jabong and ShopClues did not respond to emails seeking comment.
Myntra,
which was acquired by Flipkart for $330 million in May 2014, has already been
using eKart’s logistics services since September 2015.
eKart’s
logistics service for third-party etailers compete with well-funded
e-commerce-focused logistics firms such as Delhivery (SSN Logistics Pvt. Ltd),
Ecom Express Pvt. Ltd and Dotzot, the e-commerce focused arm of DTDC Express
Ltd.
ODISHA BUSINESS
Odisha government today launched 100 Adarsha Vidyalayas and
CBSE-affiliated English medium schools in 14 districts of the state.
Students of these model schools would get free education and all facilities like mid-day meal, uniform and textbooks free of cost like other state government-run schools.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik dedicated these schools to the people at a function at Sasan Ambagaon under his constituency Hinjli, about 35 km from here in Ganjam district.
"We hope the schools will fulfill the aspirations of rural talents. Students will not have to run to towns as they will get quality education from these schools in the villages," the Chief Minister said.
The government, he said, has decided to set up one model school in each block in the state and in the first phase, the 100 schools have been set up in 14 backward districts, including Ganjam.
In the next phase, such schools would be set up in other districts soon, he assured.

them. Hostel facilities would be provided in each school from next year, School
and Mass Education Minister Debi Prasad Mishra said.
RETAIL
Chinese
mobile device maker Xiaomi has sought complete exemption from the mandatory 30
per cent local sourcing norms for opening single brand retail stores in India.
"The
company has sought permission from the Department of Industrial Policy and
Promotion (DIPP) for opening single brand retail trading (SBRT) in India. They
also want exemption from the mandatory local sourcing norms," sources
said.
When
contacted about the matter, the company said: "We have filed an
application for SBRT but would be unable to share more details as it is still
at a nascent stage." Last year, the government had relaxed the foreign
direct investment (FDI) policy for single-brand retailing.
As
per the policy, the government may relax the sourcing norms for entities
undertaking single-brand retailing of products having 'state-of-the-art' and
'cutting edge' technology and where local sourcing is not possible.
At
present, 100 per cent FDI is permitted in the sector but the companies are
required to take FIPB permission if the limit exceeds 49 per cent.
In
respect of proposals involving FDI beyond 51 per cent, sourcing of 30 per cent
of the value of goods purchased will be from India, preferably from MSMEs,
village and cottage industries, artisans and craftsmen, in all sectors.
