BANKING
Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi on Wednesday said that the government's priority is to provide employment
and made a case for encouraging self-employment and the small and medium
enterprises. Speaking at the launch of Pradhan Mantri Micro
Units Development Refinance Agency (MUDRA) Yojana, Modi said the aim is to
provide financial assistance to the "unfunded" small entrepreneurs
who provide employment to a large number of people. The scheme, which has a
corpus of Rs 20,000 crore, can lend betweenRs 50,000 and Rs 10 lakh to small
entrepreneurs. "Through MUDRA Bank our target and focus is on 5.75 crore
who use funds of Rs 11 lakh crore, with an average per unit debt of merely Rs
17,000," the PM said, adding that a loan benefit of Rs 1 lakh to these
entrepreneurs will provide a big push to the country's gross domestic
production (GDP).
MUDRA
Bank will instill a new confidence in the small entrepreneurs that have been to
exploitation at the hands of money lenders so far, the PM said, pointing out
that the large business houses, which attract a lot of media attention, provide
employment to only 1.25 crore people. Small borrowers repay loans promptly, he
said, stressing that "saving is a habit in India and there is a need to
(give a) push to this traditional strength".
BUSINESS
Snapdeal has
acquired online mobile recharge platform FreeCharge in
the largest buyout so far in the Indian consumer Internet sector as it arms
itself with fresh ammunition to battle rivals for leadership in the online
retail sector. The Delhi-based company did not disclose the financial terms of
the transaction, but sources privy to the details said it paid over Rs 2,800
crore ($450 million) in cash and stock. "We want to target the new tsunami
of users who are going to come on to the Internet. This (acquisition) improves
our ability to acquire users at a significant velocity at a very low
cost," said Kunal Bahl, 32, the cofounder and CEO of Snapdeal.
Bahl
led the negotiations for FreeCharge, which lasted about a month. ET was the
first to report about the impending deal on March 12. "Together we
represent the largest mobile commerce company in the country now," said
Bahl, a Wharton Business School graduate who co-founded Snapdeal with
schoolmate Rohit Bansal in 2007.
INDIA
BUSINESS
The
Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) has signed cooperation
agreements with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry
(FICCI) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
A Turkish-Indian Working Committee was also established between the leading business organizations of the two countries.
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan and TOBB and B-20 Turkey head Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu visited India with the aim of developing economic ties between the two countries through such agreements.
“The launch of the Turkish-Indian Working Committee and the signing of the cooperation deals are a good start for us to boost our economic ties. We need to prepare a detailed action plan in the coming three months. We can cooperate in each section of the economy. We believe more cooperation is mainly needed to boost women’s participation in the workforce,” Hisarcıklıoğlu said.
He said India is one of the biggest emerging countries of the world and Turkey is one of the most rapidly growing economies of the European and the Middle Eastern regions.
“India makes over $470 billion of imports annually, but the share of Turkey’s exports to India is just around $586 million. This tiny amount of trade between the two countries is caused by the lack of interest and know-how with each other between Turkish and Indian business circles. We can, however, overcome this problem by building effective and permanent communication lines,” he said.

MARKETING
PepsiCo
Inc. signed a multiyear marketing partnership with the National Basketball
Association, taking over for Coca-Cola Co. and giving the company official
partner status with all four major U.S. sports leagues.
As
part of the new agreement, PepsiCo’s Mountain Dew will serve as the lead brand
in North America. It includes the company’s Aquafina, Brisk, Doritos and
Ruffles brands. The agreement includes the Women’s NBA, NBA Development League
and USA Basketball.
In
China, PepsiCo partner Tingyi -- the largest domestic soft drink manufacturer,
will position its Master Kong as the lead beverage brand of the partnership.
“The
NBA has established itself as one of the most exciting and innovative sports
leagues in the world,” PepsiCo Chief Executive Officer Indra Nooyi said in a
statement. “We look forward to working together to redefine the meaning of
sports marketing partnership.”
Financial
terms of the agreement, which begins next season, weren’t disclosed.
Coke
has been a league sponsor since 1986, using the All-Star slam dunk contest to
promote its Sprite brand. Coke’s endorsers include LeBron James.
RETAIL
Kandi
Technologies Group Inc. plans to tap rising demand for electric vehicles in
China by starting sales to individual buyers and expanding the number of cities
where the automaker rents out its vehicles by the hour.
Kandi
is selecting dealers in 26 Chinese provinces and will begin selling its new
five-seater K17 electric car in June, followed by a two-seater called the K12
about two months later, Chairman Hu Xiaoming said in a telephone interview
today.
“By
offering retail business, we can grab more market share and enhance our brand
awareness,” said Hu, whose company is based in Jinhua, about 330 kilometers
(200 miles) southwest of Shanghai. “Electric cars are a natural complement to
gasoline-run autos, especially with pollution and traffic jams choking cities.”
Automakers
in China are adding electric cars to their lineups after the government
extended incentives to promote their usage as a way to cut tailpipe emissions
and reduce the country’s dependence on imported oil. Total production of EVs
surged fourfold in the first quarter from a year earlier, according to the
Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
SUPPLY CHAIN
Apple is secretive about almost everything it does.
And among its best kept secrets is the work it does with Indian IT vendors.
The vendors themselves are sworn to secrecy through stringent non-disclosure agreements. And since Apple is invariably among their most valued clients, they don't disclose a word about their relationship with the Cupertino-based iPhone and iPad maker.
But some of the secrets are spilling out. TOI spoke to some research firms and industry sources to put together details of which vendor does what for the $200-billion US consumer electronics brand. Four large Indian IT companies -- TCS, Infosys, Wipro and Tech Mahindra -- and a relatively small vendor Exilant are the primary vendors.
The five together provide a host of services to Apple in areas of enterprise applications, business intelligence and data-warehousing, application development and maintenance (ADM), channel sales, customer relationship management, product lifecycle management, finance and customer care.
Infosys is focused on customer care and supply chain. It works on SAP modules in material management, warehouse management. It is also involved in application development and maintenance of customer care applications including Apple Certified Server Engineer (ACSE), an industry certification to provide server-based solutions and troubleshoot issues related to server installations.
