BANKING
HDFC Bank, India’s second-largest private sector lender,
has introduced a new service called missed call banking. This allows customers to use banking
services without visiting branches and ATMs or using internet and mobile banking.
“Customers having basic mobile phones, without internet access, can also use this service. Our objective is to provide alternate channels, which are convenient, for popular banking services,” Nitin Chugh, senior executive vice-president and head of digital banking at HDFC Bank, told Business Standard.
While the bank is yet to formally market it through ad campaigns, the service appears to be gaining popularity among customers. A little more than a million customers have started using this service, with transaction volume touching 1.7 million last month.

Telecom regulator Trai today said it
has written to the Finance Ministry seeking that banks be asked to move forward
on mobile
banking so as to promote financial inclusion across the country.
A system is already in place for the
service and banks need to "wake up and move" on it, Trai Chairman
Rahul Khullar said during an Assocham event on financial inclusion. "I
intend, irrespective of what the central bank does, to ensure the regulation we
have put in place will be enforced and I have already written to the Finance
Minister explaining that the system is already in place, it is now for the
Ministry of Finance to tell the bankers wake up and move," he said.
It is a "national shame" that 41 per cent
of the people in India, and 46 per cent of the rural households, don't have
bank accounts, he added.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India had in
November issued guidelines and tariffs on unstructured supplementary service
data (USSD)-based mobile banking services.
The guidelines, which came into force from January
1, have prescribed the ceiling tariff for an outgoing USSD-based mobile banking
service at Rs 1.50 per session.

Waitlisted passengers will soon get status messages
in their mobile phones if their tickets get confirmed before journey.
A senior Railway Ministry official said the
waitlisted passenger will get an SMS about the status of the ticket on the
mobile phone number given at the time of ticket booking before the journey.
Currently, one has to either dial the enquiry number
139 or use the Internet to know the waitlisted ticket status.
Others get to know the status of their tickets only
after reaching stations.
“Once the SMS-based service is operational,
passengers will get the updated status of their waitlisted tickets
automatically,” the official said, adding “only those passengers will get the
message whose tickets get confirmed.”
CRIS, the technological arm of Railways, is making
the software for the SMS-based service.
IRCTC has already launched a system for booking
tickets using mobile phones.

COMMUNICATION
The
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on Monday
that it plans to mandate that all new cars be equipped with a
vehicle-to-vehicle communication system that could prevent most accidents.
The Transportation agency will develop and oversee
the standards and regulations for the systems. Car manufacturers, however,
would be responsible for installing the radio communication system, GPS sensors
and needed software into the vehicles.
Using short-range radio signals, cars could trade
messages, basically engaging in a two-way conversation that would allow them to
talk to each other. This communication between vehicle could head off about 80%
of impending crashes, by warning and alerting the driver, or even taking
automatic preventive measures (braking or steering adjustments).
While many modern cars can already do this by using
sensors to detect objects around the vehicle., the NHTSA's suggested system
would allow for cars to relay information to each other about speed, direction,
traffic patterns, and roadway conditions.
FINANCE
Nissan and Renault have been most aggressive when it
comes to cross-badging
products for the Indian market. The Japanese and French companies, global
alliance partners, have rolled out a number of cross-badged products which
essentially means rolling out the same car with cosmetic changes under both
Nissan and Renault brands. But now, a top Nissan official said, both car majors
will steer clear of cross-badging, ending this experiment with Renault Duster
and Nissan Terrano.
"Cross-badging products will end with Renault Duster and Nissan Terraro. In the first stage we did cross-badging because Nissan and Renault were newcomers in this market and needed the line up to present the brands in India. Cross-badging allowed us to launch new products quickly and maximize efficiencies," Toru Hasegawa, corporate VP, Nissan Motor Company, said.
Nissan and Renault will roll out successor models in future instead of cross-badging the same model. "In the next generation, for instance, the Terrano will be replaced by Nissan-type products. Renault will replace Duster in the next generation with Renault products," Hasegawa said.

INDIA BUSINESS
Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd , India's largest utility vehicle
maker, and unit Ssangyong Motor Co Ltd <003620.KS> will launch their
first jointly developed engine in the first quarter of 2015, a senior executive
of the Indian company said.
The South Korean company, which Mahindra acquired in
2011, will use the engine in its X100 compact sport utility vehicle to be
launched next year, Pawan Goenka, president of Mahindra's automotive and farm
equipment sectors, said on Thursday.
"Mahindra most likely will have a ... version
of it on that (X100) platform," he said. "There are future products
that we will collaborate on where a common platform either of Mahindra or
Ssangyong could potentially be used for both."
He expects the two companies to eventually produce
six engines, which will include petrol and diesel variants.
Mahindra will also roll out two of its own compact
SUVs and a commercial vehicle in 2015, he said. The company has no plans to
launch any passenger vehicles this year.
Small SUVs, such as Ford Motor Co's EcoSport and
Renault SA's Duster, have remained one of the few bright spots in a local auto
market that is bracing for weak demand on the back of a slowing economy,
combined with high interest rates and fuel costs.

BUSINESS
IBM began rolling out its Watson supercomputer
system across Africa on Thursday, saying it would help to address continental
development obstacles as diverse as medical diagnoses, economic data collection
and e-commerce research.
The world's biggest technology service provider said
"Project Lucy" would take 10 years and cost $100 million. The
undertaking was named after the earliest known human ancestor fossil, which was
found in east Africa. "I believe it will spur a whole era of innovation
for entrepreneurs here," IBM Chief Executive Ginni Rometty told delegates
at a conference on Wednesday.
"Data ... needs to be refined. It will
determine undisputed winners and losers across every industry," she said.
As an example, Rometty cited how Morocco had used sophisticated
data mining for "smart agriculture" to improve how crops are grown by
predicting weather, demand and disease outbreaks.
