Goods
and services tax (GST) might be the reform that the Indian industry has yearned
for, but the July 1 rollout of the new regime is set to give a perfectly timed
boost to a few new foreign entrants in the Indian automobile market.
SAIC
Motor (China’s largest carmaker) and Kia Motors (South Korea’s oldest auto OEM)
are both set to open up shop by 2019 and, according to sources, are likely to
lead with models in the compact SUV segment, one of the fastest growing in the
market. The recently rolled-out GST is particularly rewarding for models in the
SUV segment, with effective taxation coming down substantially. And, both
manufacturers have announced plans to set up manufacturing facilities in India.
“It
becomes more likely that these companies will lead with SUVs because of the
structure of the GST and the benefits it provides to local manufacturing. While
the tax break is uniform across the sector, the new entrants will be in a more
comfortable environment starting out,” pointed out a senior analyst.

HMD
Global, the company that currently hold the licensing rights to Nokia-branded
phones, has announced it has partnered with Zeiss camera lenses. Zeiss will now
collaborate with HMD Global to develop better camera lensing solutions for new
Nokia phones.
“Collaborating
with Zeiss is an important part of our commitment to always deliver the very
best experience for our customers,” HMD Global CEO Arto Nummela said.
“Our
fans want more than a great smartphone camera, they want a complete imaging
experience that doesn’t just set the standard but redefines it. Our fans expect
it and, together with ZEISS, we’re delivering it – co-developed imaging
excellence for all.”
This
exclusive partnership between HMD Global and Zeiss has been expected by fans
since Nokia already has a history with the camera lens maker. Nokia first
partnered with Zeiss way back in 2005, and that collaboration resulted in the
release of the N90 smartphone that very same year. Other Nokia phones that had
Zeiss lenses included the 2010 Nokia N18 and the 2012 Nokia 808 PureView.

In
the shadow of its Inspire partner conference, Microsoft today launched in preview three new tools for small
businesses: Microsoft Connections, Microsoft Listings and Microsoft Invoicing.
These join the company’s existing stable of small business tools like Microsoft Bookings and the Outlook Customer Manager.
Microsoft
Connections allows its users to create Mailchimp-like email marketing
campaigns. The new service, which is available on the web, Android and iOS,
will offer the usual trappings of an email marketing campaign tool, including
the ability to manage subscribers, monitor campaign performance (open rates,
clicks, new customers, redemptions, etc.) and, of course, create the actual
campaigns. While the details about how exactly the service works remain sparse,
Microsoft says it will offer users a number of pre-designed templates for their
newsletters and “simple ways for people to join your mailing list or
unsubscribe.” A company spokesperson also told us that the new tools will be
available at no extra cost.

It will be the first project in the subcontinent with a facility to directly obtain molten aluminium from the smelter, a senior official said.
The park, involving an investment of Rs 180 crore, will be spread over 223
acres of industrial land.
With aluminium consumption growing at 15 per cent on a yearly basis and the demand set to rise, the park is being set up in Odisha with the state contributing to 54 per cent of the country's total smelting capacity, he said.
"We have already received many investment proposals for the Aluminium Park in Angul and we aim to create around 15000 job opportunities through the project," Sanjeev Chopra, Principal Secretary, state Industries Department, said.
The Aluminium Park would also create opportunities for downstream industries in the aluminium sector.
