HSBC
will boost mobile banking security by enabling more than 15 million customers
to access accounts online using voice or fingerprint recognition biometric
technologies.
The
system will be rolled out first for customers of HSBC’s First Direct internet and
phone banking division in the coming weeks and for the rest of HSBC’s customers
in the summer.
Industry
commentators said this is a leap forward for biometrics technology being used
in the UK banking industry for authentication of account holders.
Barclays
has been using voice
authentication in call
centres since 2013 and in 2014 announced plans to introduce finger
vein recognition technology, but only for high-worth and corporate
customers.
All
HSBC customers will have access to fingerprint authentication services using
the fingerprint readers built into Apple’s iPhones in combination with HSBC’s
mobile banking app.
BUSINESS
Mukesh Amabni-owned Reliance Jio's launch of 4G services is a major
threat to data tariffs and it could disrupt data pricing, leading to data
realisations softening by 30-40% by FY17 from the current levels, according to
India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra).
"A steep decline in data realisations coupled with gradual growth in consumption volumes could lower the data ARPUs. Data ARPUs have been growing, led by growth in per capita volumes consumed, which is offsetting the declining data realisations," the ratings agency said.
The proposed 4G launch will intensify competition, which will squeeze the market share, EBITDA margins and credit metrics of Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, it said, adding that Reliance Jio will look to unsettle some of the large operators in their prominent geographies, leading to a re-distribution of the market share, which is currently concentrated among the top three operators.
Airtel is the market leader of the Indian telecom market with revenue market share and subscriber market share of around 30% and 24%, respectively. Idea has been witnessing robust growth, thus catching up to Vodafone, which is at the second place. The three operators together cater to around 60% of the total telecom subscribers while they hold more than 67% of the revenue market share.

ODISHA BUSINESS
Mining
conglomerate Vedanta is planning to commission an aluminium park in
Odisha, a move that will help the state become the aluminium hub of the world.
Vedanta today said it will ink a memorandum of understanding with the Odisha government to set up the aluminium park across 240 acres of land in Jharsuguda.
"The park has the potential to attract over Rs 1,000 crore of investment which can be operationalised within a relatively short time-frame," Vedanta CEO (Aluminium) Abhijit Pati said.
He also said that the park can generate direct and indirect employment to about 17,000 people.
"With this kind of infrastructure, Odisha can become the aluminium hub of the world," he noted.
The park will facilitate easy transport of aluminium in liquid form, which would provide substantial cost savings for the downstream industries.
Besides, the move could attract a large number of aluminium-based industries generating huge revenues and employment in the region, the company said.
According to the company, Odisha has abundant reserves of bauxite and accounts for 55% of India's deposits.
Coal, another important raw material for the smelters, is also available in abundance in the state.
"Easy proximity to the domestic markets and the geographical advantage of a large coastline which gives quick access to ports and the export market make Odisha a favourable destination for downstream industries," Pati said.
